Chlorine leak at Gulf Islands Waterpark sends 12 to hospital

Fun in the sun turned into a hospital visit for a dozen people at Gulf Islands Waterpark in Gulfport today.
Fire Chief Mike Beyerstedt tells News 25 crews responded this morning and two people were taken by AMR to Garden Park Medical Center after extra chlorine was injected into a portion of the lazy river and it caused respiratory issues for those in the water. Around 3 p.m., AMR crews returned to the scene and evaluated 35 people and ten of those were taken to the hospital.
Although no injuries are serious, General Manager Mark Moore says a private contractor made the mistake.
A part of the lazy river was shut down for safety reasons, but it reopened and they will continue testing it tomorrow.
