Chevron’s Fuel Your School Program Provides Boogie Boards for Singing River Academy Students

Students in Charlene Hooks’ fifth grade class at Singing River Academy showed Pascagoula Chevron Refinery officials their math skills using Boogie Boards, new technology equipment purchased through a Donors Choose grant and funded through Chevron’s Fuel Your School program.
Chevron Refinery General Manager Bruce Chinn was on hand to watch the students use the Boogie Boards and tried his hand at working a math problem using the new technology with a little assistance from students.
Math teacher Charlene Hooks’ said the Boogie Boards have created a great deal of excitement in math for her students. “Some children didn’t really enjoy math before the arrival of the Boogie Boards, but my students have really turned into math lovers through the use of the boards,” she said.
The $1,079 grant provided 24 Boogie Boards for Hooks’ classroom. The boards are LCD writing pads that erase electronically and provide the equivalent of 5,000 sheets of paper.
More than $10,000 has already been awarded to teachers in schools across Jackson County during October through the Fuel Your School program and another $40,000 will be awarded during the next several weeks. Through Oct. 31, Chevron will donate $1 (up to $50,000) every time motorists purchase eight gallons of gas or more at a participating Chevron or Texaco station in the county.
This is the fourth year the refinery has taken part in the Fuel Your School program which provides the opportunity for teachers to apply for new materials to enhance learning in their classrooms. Science, technology, engineering and math-related projects are considered for funding. Singing River Academy is one of 19 schools in the Pascagoula-Gautier School District
