Charities No Longer Exempt From Telephone Solicitation Requirements
The Mississippi Public Service Commission and Secretary of State’s Office will be cracking down on those who violate a recent change in the law under the new provisions of the Telephone Solicitation Act, and charities are not exempt.
Starting July 1st, provisions of the Telephone Solicitation Act will be enforced. One of the changes focuses on paid telephone solicitations by charities.
Right now, organizations using volunteers to fundraise are exempt from certain requirements under state law, but by next month, charities will be required to register before soliciting funds over the phone or via text, and nonprofits will also be required to honor the no call list.
Those who violate this law could be fined up to $10,000 per violation.
