Celebration of Partnership Ceremony
A new ship with the latest ocean navigating technology will be launching out of Pascagoula to help the U.S. Navy.
A ceremony celebrating the partnership that made construction of the USNS Maury possible was held at the VT Halter Marine Shipyard today.
The new Navy vessel is named in honor of Commodore Matthew Fontaine Maury, known as the “father of oceanography.” Senator Roger Wicker, who spoke at the event, has a son-in-law who is directly related to Maury.
The new Navy vessel is designed to assist the U.S. military with mapping and locating information underneath the ocean. Senator Wicker said, “It is going to continue our effort, which is ongoing for decades and decades to come, of mapping the ocean. It might surprise a lot of people but we know more about the surface of Mars, we know more about the surface of the moon than we do the floor of the ocean.”
The partnership is among VT Halter Marine, Naval Meteorology and Oceanography Command and Military Sealift Command.
