Carl Legett Memorial Fishing Tournament

Dedicated fishermen sailed out to sea as early as midnight hoping to reel in top prize for this year’s 22nd annual Carl Leggett Memorial Fishing Tournament.
Leggett, who passed away in 1995, was a Gulfport native and Air Force veteran. For 34 years he was a staple in the Home Builder’s Association, the group that now holds this tournament each year in his honor.
This year’s guaranteed tournament payout is well over $26,000 along with daily prizes.
Organizers remember starting the tournament over two decades ago and how it has grown tremendously. Tournament Chairman Stephen Braun said, “We started at the Broadwater, giving away rod and reels with one tent and some pallets to stand on and it’s evolved from that to a four day deal with over $40,000 in cash and prizes and went from four categories to 12. It’s just really grown over the years and it amazes me how fast it has grown. Everybody loves it. It’s just a good time, a lot of work, but a lot of fun.”
Weigh-ins are tonight from 4 to 8 at Point Cadet Marina.
Tomorrow, the kids fishing tournament kicks off at 8 a.m. and the bikini contest is at 7:30 p.m.
