Capital murder suspect’s preliminary hearing

The suspect in the murder of Biloxi Police Officer Robert McKeithen had his preliminary hearing this morning at the Harrison County Courthouse.

Nineteen-year-old Darian Atkinson smiled as he entered the courtroom for his testimony hearing. During the hearing, Gulfport Police Detective Samuel Jewel gave a testimony detailing Atkinson’s actions leading up to the murder and up until his capture.

During testimony, Jewel mentioned the surveillance footage from the Lopez Quave Public Safety Center which clearly shows the crime taking place. Prosecutor Herman Cox said, “Well, I believe it is clear from the evidence that this defendant went to the Biloxi Police Department to ambush and kill a police officer. Based on the evidence, he clearly did that. Based on this type of case, this is why we have the death penalty in Mississippi.”

News 25 will have more on Atkinson’s preliminary hearing today at 5 and 5:30.
