Candlelight Vigil for Homicide Victim
A beautiful spirit, that’s the way dozens of Hattiesburg residents described 25-year-old Dee Whigham during a candlelight vigil this evening.
Coworkers, friends and strangers gathered at the Spectrum Center in Hattiesburg to remember the transgender woman who was found dead in a hotel in St. Martin.
The evening was filled with laughs, tears, prayer and song. Those who never met Whigham showed support by extending their arms around those who knew her best.
Those who knew her best described how fearless she was and reminisced on how kind she was to others. Keisha Jackson worked with Dee Whigham. She said, “Work will never be the same. Life in general will never be the same without Dee because she was just the most giving and bubbly and happy and just all around bright person.”
Another candlelight vigil will be held tomorrow evening along the Coast. The Mississippi Rainbow Center, along with other local organizations, will host the vigil at the Lighthouse Community Church in Biloxi at 7 p.m.
