‘I Can’ girls engineering camp

A group of girls in Pass Christian this week are saying ‘I can’ in an effort to support their future and dreams.

This ‘I Can’ camp provides girls 11 through 14 with an appreciation for engineering and a look at multiple career opportunities. Today, Mississippi Power engineers had the girls for the day. They learned about reactions, chemicals and even made some slime and high heel shoes using science.

Some of the experiments had to be taken outside to get the full learning experience. Mississippi Power Mechanical Engineer Yaneira Lara said, “I think it is important to kind of teach these young girls at an early age that STEM careers are possible for them and that the opportunities are there because engineering is all around us and showing them things like a high heel shoe is engineering and to hopefully spark their interest and ask questions in school.”

This camp lasts all week and each day a new company will come in to show the girls what is waiting for them in the world of STEM.
