Business owners enforcing mask mandate in Harrison and Jackson counties

After Governor Tate Reeves issued a mask mandate for 13 counties, many residents wonder who is responsible for enforcing it.

For Harrison and Jackson counties, the burden falls on business owners. Harrison County Sheriff Troy Peterson says the only thing they can enforce is what happens in the courthouse and in the jail. If business owners wish to sign charges, such as trespassing charges if a patron refuses to leave for not wearing a mask, then law enforcement would get involved.

Anyone violating the mandate could face a fine of up to $500 or spend six months in jail.

Governor Reeves says the mask mandate may extend beyond Monday.
