Bringing Monuments to Beauvoir
Officials say it’s going to take a multi-city effort to bring historic Confederate monuments to Beauvoir.
Leaders from both the cities of Gulfport and Biloxi are in communication with New Orleans officials to extend the offer for the monuments to be temporarily housed at Beauvoir. Executive Director Greg Stewart tells News 25 he would hate to see the monuments go to a for-profit slavery museum and they would love to display them at the Jefferson Davis home. “We want to be good neighbors to New Orleans and offer them a place, if they’re not proud of the monuments right now or if they’re going through a spasm of self-doubt, that’s what we’re here for. We would only take them on loan and whenever it was appropriate and they wanted to take them back then they’re certainly welcome to,” said Stewart.
For now, it’s a waiting game to see what New Orleans decides to do with the monuments.[mappress mapid=”2127″]
