“Bowties and Beignets” Benefits Harrison County Youth Court

A local group used bowties and beignets to draw an early morning crowd. They raised about $15,000 for the Harrison County Youth Court. The organization provides emergency services for abused, abandoned, or neglected children.
Special guests sported their snazziest neckwear at 8 a.m. for the “Bow Ties and Beignets” event held at Island View Resort. Attendees say raising money for local youth in need made the early event worthwhile.
Proceeds go to the Harrison County Youth Court. The fundraiser had a variety of silent auctions, including signed bow ties from Robin Roberts and USM baseball star alum Brian Dozier.
“We are so grateful, grateful to have the governor and his wife here, grateful to have Mayor Hewes and his wife as special guests. I mean, how special is this,” said Margaret Alfonso, with Harrison County Youth Court.
Youth court officials plan to make much needed upgrades to the children’s playground in the back of the shelter. For children who have been dealt a hard hand in life, this playground is a haven where kids are free to be kids. “It gets their little minds off why they’re there, you know. So that’s the main thing. They’re children like every other child, the love to be entertained, they love new activities, they love pizza, they love parks, and they love movies. This is the type of event we have to have to fund those types of activities,” said Alfonso.
More upgrades are needed, like replacing the hard rocks with softer materials. But the $15,000 raised from “Bow Ties and Beignets” is enough to get them started.
