Bonnet Carre Spillway possibly reopening within the next few days

On top of dealing with the Coronavirus, Mississippi now has another battle to face.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineer expects to reopen the Bonnet Carre Spillway within the next couple of days.

The corps of engineers said the river is expected to crest above 17 feet as early as Friday. That would likely lead to the opening of a structure that diverts water through the Bonnet Carre Spillway. It would be the first time the structure has been used three years in a row.

Extended openings last year caused major devastation to local sea life, fishermen, and parts of the tourism industry. “This is going to have drastic consequences for our seafood industry. On top of what we are dealing with in the Coronavirus, we could very seriously have some food security issues within a month from now. We were looking at different things with the imported food coming into the country and the lock down of different states, getting food into the local states is going to be a challenge we foresee in the next couple of months ahead of us.”

If you don’t want to see the spillway reopen, the director of Mississippi Commercial Fisheries asks that you contact elected officials as soon as possible and let them know your thoughts.
