Body found in Wolf River in Harrison County identified as swimmer reported missing Thursday

HARRISON COUNTY, Miss. (WXXV) — The body of a man who drowned in the Wolf River on Thursday afternoon has been found as of Friday morning.

According to Harrison County Sheriff Troy Peterson, the body has been identified as 24-year-old Miles Spear of Bay St. Louis.

Peterson says the drowning happened Thursday afternoon after a group of 5 friends, suspected to be in their mid-20s, went swimming in the Wolf River under the Bells Ferry Bridge. He says a strong current likely contributed to the Spear’s death.

Witnesses say friends attempted to rescue Spear, but were unsuccessful. Search teams began recovery efforts Thursday evening, but were later force to suspend operations due to darkness. Friday morning, search teams began looking at about 6 a.m. and located Spear’s body at approximately 7:05 a.m. about 150 yards downstream from the Bells Ferry Bridge.

There was another drowning in the Wolf River just last year, of a Long Beach High School senior, Peyton Taylor Henson.
