Boating safety reminders

Memorial Day is launching off the summer season and that means more boats out on the water.
DMR officials are urging boaters to keep safety first before heading out to have fun this summer. Children 12 and under should always be in life jackets and wearing the correct size. Make sure your fire extinguishers are in the green and operable. Officials say a frequent contributor to fatalities out on the water is alcohol. The law requires anyone operating a vessel to be sober. Captain Chris Caldwell with the Mississippi Department of Marine Resources said, “We do have a number of fatalities across the Gulf Coast every year. The main thing is know your limitations and be responsible as a vessel operator and remain with those perimeters and care for not just the people in your vessel, but the ones you share the waterways with.”
DMR officials also want to remind boaters to check that your flares are not expired.
