Blood Center in urgent need of O-type blood

Bienville Orthopaedic in Vancleave took some time to host a blood drive to help out the Blood Center.

There is an urgent need for all blood types, but especially O-type blood. Both patients and blood centers depend on donors to ensure that blood is available for life-saving treatments.

Those that donated blood received a t-shirt, hat, and also a chance to win a staycation prize package. To enter to win the prize pack, all donors had to do was take a selfie while donating, submit the selfie, and fill out an entry form.

Blood Center Coastal Region Coordinator Gina Necaise tells News 25 why it is so important to give blood.  “Particularly in the summer, it’s a hard time especially around the holidays when everyone is traveling and out of school, but the need for blood is constant. We have to collect 300 units a day to keep the hospitals supplied and blood can’t be manufactured. So, it is a very important community service.”

The Blood Center will host another blood drive July 5th from 11 a.m. until 5 p.m. at Rouses Market in Ocean Springs.
