Blessing of the Fleet

Boaters lined the Biloxi Channel yesterday to take part in an almost century long tradition.

Thirty-five shrimpers and boaters lined up to receive their blessings from Father Gregory Barras for a safe and bountiful season.

Before the blessings, a ceremonial wreath was dropped into the water, honoring fishermen and shrimpers who have passed away.

Mark Kopszywa and Alexis Trochesset were named this year’s shrimp king and queen, honoring the heritage of the annual blessing. “We got chosen to go amongst all of the other past kings and queens and our names will be on past royalty forever.” “We are now in the history of Biloxi, our names, my son, our names are embedded in the history of Biloxi now.”

The first Blessing of the Fleet took place in 1929 on the shores of Biloxi Bay. After mass, a priest blessed the boats before they went back out on the water.
