Blessing of the Fleet

A long-time Biloxi tradition is set for this weekend: the 90th annual Blessing of the Fleet.

From 4 to 10 p.m. on Saturday, Biloxians will gather for the fais do-do at Point Cadet Pavilion and then Sunday the celebration continues for the actual blessing.

At 2 p.m. boats will line up in the west end of the Biloxi channel, south of the Biloxi Small Craft Harbor, and parade east in the Biloxi Channel.

All shrimp and recreational boats are invited to receive a blessing for a safe and bountiful season. Mike Kovacevich with the Blessing of the Fleet Board of Directors said, “Ninety years ago, they decided to get the priests to bless the boats and back in the early 1900s this was the seafood capital of the world, Biloxi was. So, imagine how much seafood was coming out of this little Gulf Coast town. My family came from Croatia to Biloxi for the seafood. That was their heritage, that’s what they came to do.”
