Blessing of the Fleet Shrimp Festival

Shrimp was the main course meal over the weekend at the Blessing of the Fleet Shrimp Festival in Biloxi.

Before all of the boats were blessed Sunday, locals gathered at the Point Cadet Pavilion in Biloxi to chow down on boiled shrimp, potatoes, and corn.

Shrimp wasn’t the only focus as there was live music, numerous vendors, and activities for the kids of the festival.

With the weather holding up this year, the festival was the perfect way to celebrate before the tradition and heritage of the annual Blessing of the Fleet.  Biloxi Shrimp Festival Organizer Michael Kovacevich said, “In the old days, this was like the Fourth of July.  Old Biloxi families would fly back home from the Blessing of the Fleet because it was such a big event. There were so many shrimp boats, they would get up early in the morning, go to the islands and party and then rush back here to get blessed.”

After the shrimp festival, the annual Fais Do Do Street Dance hit Biloxi before the blessing Sunday.
