Biloxi to Get Nearly $5 Million in BP Damages

Nearly $5 million will be making its way to Biloxi within the next 30 days.
Tonight, the City Council announced Biloxi has settled local government claims with BP for economic losses caused by the 2010 oil spill. Biloxi’s payments are part of the $18.7 billion settlement of civil claims filed against BP that were announced last week.
Mayor Andrew ‘FoFo’ Gilich says he will suggest the city council use the $4.9 million to establish a special reserve account to be used to leverage other federal and state monies for economic development. “It could have always been more. You look at what happened through the state and through the community down here, you always want more but it was recommended and I think the council affirmed it was a good amount to move forward with,” said Mayor Gilich.
A press release sent out by the city of Biloxi says a separate offer was made to Biloxi public schools but Superintendent Arthur McMillan tells News 25 no agreement with BP has been made yet.
