Biloxi Shuckers vs. William Carey

What started as a fundraiser during the aftermath of a 2017 tornado, tonight’s exhibition game between the Biloxi Shuckers and William Carey University has turned into a third annual pre-season get together.

For the Shuckers it’s the bridge between spring training and the Southern League regular season. For the Crusaders, it’s already their second trip down to MGM Park over the past two weeks.

Shuckers back on the Coast for their fifth season in Biloxi, one last tune-up before they defend their first and second half Southern League titles from 2018.

Shuckers win 15-1 over William Carey.

Shuckers more than ready for opening day as both parties enjoy the third year of a successful partnership with Carey Athletics. Shuckers Ambassador Barry Lyons said, “Yes, it started as a fundraiser, but the partnership and the relationship has grown to such that it’s a fun event for the William Carey family. And certainly it’s a great way for us, the Biloxi Shuckers to get a game day practice if you will.”

William Carey Pitcher J.C. Sanner said, “Oh man, there’s just so many things that factor into coming down here. I mean obviously playing at the stadium is awesome, the atmosphere, kind of the big league experience. But going to What-a-Burger is probably the biggest thing, honestly. We go to What-a-Burger and we’ve been undefeated every time we’ve gone to What-a-Burger, so that’s honestly probably the best thing about coming down here.”

The Shuckers will lead off their 2019 campaign against the Birmingham Barons with first pitch set for 6:35 p.m. on Thursday from MGM Park.
