Biloxi Shuckers vs. Mississippi Braves (game 1)

After a day of rest for MGM Park following the Conference USA Tournament, it was time for the Biloxi Shuckers to reclaim their first base dugout for a five game homestand versus the Mississippi Braves.

While they were gone, the Shuckers lost three out of five to the Mobile Bay Bears, but they didn’t lose their hold on first place in the Southern League South. Biloxi coming in with a three and a half game edge over the rest.

Braves win 11-1. Bay Bears had their game rained out tonight so the Shuckers only drop a half-game maintaining a three-game lead for first in the Southern League South.

Shuckers first baseman Jake Gatewood has been named Southern League Player of the Week, becoming the first player from Biloxi to win a weekly award this season.

From May 21st through the 27th, the 22-year-old Gatewood led the league with seven extra base hits, 22 total bases, and a .917 slugging percentage.

After a rough start to the year, the number 17 overall prospect of the Milwaukee Brewers is tied for second in the league with nine home runs and third with 32 RBIs.

Gatewood was a first round pick in 2014.

Jackson Generals right-handed pitcher Jon Duplantier is pitcher of the week. He’s the number one overall prospect of the Arizona Diamondbacks.
