Biloxi Shuckers host blood drive at MGM Park

Blood drives have been in high demand throughout the COVID-19 pandemic and now the Biloxi Shuckers baseball organization joined forces with the American Red Cross today to lend a helping hand.

Blood donors filed through the Shuckers’ locker room at MGM Park all afternoon to give blood.

The Shuckers partnered with the Red Cross after they reached out to numerous minor league teams about hosting blood drives and they say the need is great right now since winter weather has canceled blood drives across the region.

Both Shuckers officials and donors say it was a neat experience to give blood in a locker room setting to help others. Biloxi Shuckers Group Sales Coordinator Layton Markwood said, “That’s the most important thing for us, is our community here in Biloxi, and being a bigger better part of the community in as many ways as we can.”

Blood donor Allen Bealer said, “Being a baseball fan, it’s probably one of the coolest things I’ve been able to do, is be inside the home team’s locker room.”

A total of 74 appointments were made online to give blood today and combined with a few walk-in appointments, officials say they exceeded their blood donation goal.
