Biloxi Shuckers ambassador Barry Lyons named new manager of Lexington Legends

Former MLB catcher Barry Lyons has deep roots in Biloxi, cementing his legacy in his hometown as the man who brought the Biloxi Shuckers to the Gulf Coast. Now, he’s moving onto the next chapter of his career on the diamond.

Today, the Lexington Legends announced Lyons as their new manager starting in January, following his eight-year run as ambassador of the Shuckers.

His nephew, Nathan Lyons, recently purchased the Legends, who play in the Atlantic League of professional baseball, and he knew just where to find a skipper with his uncle having previously managed in the minors for three years in the 90s.

As Lyons now returns to the dugout, he says it’s all love for Shuck Nation. “I’m just so proud. It was a legacy thing for me. It was something I wanted to honor my family name, my parents, my brothers and all of my relatives. The Lyons name in Biloxi is synonymous with sports, synonymous with good people, and that was the main thing that really pushed me and motivated me to do that. Now that it’s here, my legacy I hope is forever entrenched in the ball park.”

Lyons says he’s an old school manager. No bunting and let the players play.
