Biloxi PD shares safety tips ahead of Fourth of July
BILOXI, Miss. (WXXV)- As thousands of people get ready to celebrate the Fourth of July on the Coast, police want to remind everyone that a safe holiday starts with making smart decisions and being prepared.
The Mississippi State Department of Health says fireworks, boats, swimming, grilling, and the summer heat can all pose serious risk if people aren’t careful.
Police are encouraging families to follow firework safety guidelines, never drive or boat impaired, keep a close eye on children around water, and stay hydrated during outdoor celebrations.
Officers say planning ahead can help reduce risks and make the holiday weekend enjoyable for everyone. Lt. Candace Young said, “On the Fourth of July every year we have a big firework show in the City of Biloxi. Every year we have additional officers come in, off duty, off from their regular shifts to come in and work extra. So, you’ll see an increase in police officer presence. Especially along Highway 90, the Biloxi Ocean Springs Bridge, and all the way down here to Porter and White Avenue. Fireworks are permitted in the City of Biloxi on July 4th. We do have a firework free zone that’s going to be along Highway 90 from Oak Street to Lameuse Street, no fireworks in that area. A lot of the injuries we see at this time, are things that could be prevented with just a little extra caution.”
The Biloxi Police Department is also reminding city residents about the city’s no firework zone.
They’re also inviting the community to enjoy the America250 Firework Show on Biloxi Beach Saturday night at 9 p.m.
