Biloxi budget meeting for the new year

The City of Biloxi held their second budget meeting today to iron out their finances ahead of the new year.

The City of Biloxi will be operating under a budget of $59 million, the same amount that was allocated for last year.

Today’s meeting was departmental, with police and fire departments submitting their budget requests for the new year.

Vincent Creel with the City of Biloxi tells News 25 that this year’s budget meetings are a little more important following the two percent hike in retirement benefits for the state’s public employees. “What we’re looking to do is try and provide the same services that people have come to expect and not raise anybody’s taxes. That’s a challenging thing for the council members and the mayor to do and that’s what they’re going to be doing over the next month.”

A two percent jump in retirement is estimated to cost the city an extra $800,000.
