Biloxi Black Beach Weekend Preparations Underway

Thousands are expected along the shores of Biloxi this weekend for the annual Black Beach Weekend. While the event doesn’t start until Friday, News 25’s Kendra Turley shows us how law enforcement officials and event promoters are making last minute preparations. Biloxi Beach has been pretty quiet lately, but starting Friday, thousands of spring breakers will cover the shores for Black Beach Weekend. Organizer Maurice Bryant said, “We’ll continue through the weekend, including concerts, car show, night life and different events.”
While the title of the event suggests it’s only for African Americans, Bryant tells News 25 it’s for people of all color.
This weekend is already a highly anticipated event for thousands of spring breakers throughout the South. Saturday’s concert at the Coast Coliseum is expected to attract an even larger crowd than usual. Rap artist and headliner Future will take the stage along with other well-known R&B and hip hop artists. “It’s got Rich Homie Quan, Yo Gotti, and Torey Lanes. A lot of big names are going to be on the Coast. It’s a really good look for the Coast,” said Bryant.
A crowd of nearly 25,000 packed the beach and coliseum grounds for the event last year. With an even larger crowded expected to gather along a small portion of Highway 90, the Biloxi Police Department is planning to have extra patrols out on the streets. Patrol Commander Major Jim Adamo said, “We expect a lot of both pedestrian and vehicular traffic along Highway 90. It’ll be congested extensively, generally between Rodenburg Avenue and Debuys.”
The police department is encouraging those who travel along Highway 90 frequently to start thinking of an alternate route. “When you’re trying to get east and west, of course, depending on where you’re trying to get, it’ll make all the difference in the world,” said Major Adamo.
