Beware of phone scams demanding payments

Mississippi Power is urging customers to be aware of scammers from phone calls demanding payments to social media phishing attempts around April 1st.

According to Mississippi Power, scammers will try a number of approaches to try and fool customers into thinking their power bill is overdue and their lights are about to be turned off.

The best advice to anyone who gets a call demanding payment or personal information is to hang up and report it to local law enforcement and call Mississippi Power.

Never give out personal information to a caller and be on guard for leading questions that could prompt you to accidentally give out personal information.

The Federal Trade Commission says more than $117 million was lost to social media scammers in the first six months of 2020.
