Be Safe When Deep Frying Turkeys
The hottest room in the house on Thanksgiving is usually the kitchen. Authorities say the number of kitchen fires triple on Thanksgiving Day. Of the 1,300 expected to happen tomorrow, don’t let your home be one of them.
The Gulfport Fire Department is urging you to be extra careful, especially if you are deep frying a turkey. This morning, they gave a grand demonstration of what not to do. First off, test your level with water beforehand. This is to avoid a hot oil overflow onto the flame. If your oil does spill over and starts a fire, do not try to put it out with water. That will only escalate the flames.
However you chose to prepare your turkey, the fire department says the biggest thing you can do is stay attentive to your meals. Gulfport Fire Chief Mike Beyerstedt said, “You’ve got to always be watching this stuff and that goes to the inside of the house, too. You have a lot of activity going on around Thanksgiving, family, friends over to visit. It’s easy to forget you left something on the stove or there’s something in the oven. Unattended cooking is how most of these fires end up starting.”
The fire department also wants to remind you that if you are frying a turkey do it outside and away from your home, not in your garage and not on your porch.
