Battery causes Biloxi apartment fire

A fire at an apartment complex in Biloxi this afternoon left two residents happy to be alive.

Just before noon, Biloxi Fire Department responded to Southwind Apartments off Irish Hill Drive. Two residents who live in the complex tell News 25 they were inside when an electric bike battery exploded and started the fire.

The bike was situated near the front door and the two had to escape through the back window. There were also two pets that made it out safely. Mandy McKinstry escaped from the fire. She said, “It sounded like fireworks and blew up, flames and everything all up in the living room. I had to jump off from the bed and jump over the chair onto the floor and crawl all the way over to the bedroom window and then he picked me up to put me out the bedroom window.”

No other apartments were damaged in the fire.
