Back Bay Mission Unveils New Housing for Homeless Veterans
The Department of Housing and Urban Development (H.U.D.) recently secured funding to be used to build homes specifically for homeless vets. Veterans can apply for housing through the Department of Veterans Affairs by accepting health benefits and receiving a VASH voucher, a program created by President Obama to end veteran homelessness by 2016.
Donna Wickes, Community Planning and Development Director for Biloxi, says, “The goal now through the President is to end homelessness and especially veterans homelessness by the end of 2015, which will be the beginning of 2016, so there is a big push now to build housing for the veterans through the VASH vouchers to build exciting housing like this.”
In January H.U.D. will be performing its annual count in Gulfport to find out how many veterans are homeless in south Mississippi.
