Avenue of the Flags Ceremony in Gautier
Red, white and blue flooded in Gautier earlier this afternoon, as well as tears.
Emotional poems and speeches honoring the fallen were read outside the Veteran’s Tribute Tower. Families of servicemen and women who lost their lives fighting for our country carried flags, adding to the Avenue of Flags outside of city hall.
Jane Green, who lost her son, dedicated a flag to the American Legion Post 1992, after he raised it and proudly represented his hometown while fighting in Afghanistan. “Ever have those two men walk up to your door and tell you that you have lost someone in the service? Memorial Day is never the same as it was. I was always patriotic but it kind of hurts my heart a little bit because I go out to the Veteran’s Cemetery and watch those 17,000 graves receive their flag and some of them don’t receive visitors all year long. It’s special. I can’t even put it in words,” said Green.
This is the third year the American Legion Post 1992 has hosted this ceremony in Gautier.
