Attorney General Jim Hood delivers $36M check to Mississippi general fund

Attorney General and Democratic candidate for governor Jim Hood delivered a check for more than $36 million to the Mississippi general fund that includes settlement money recently collected through consumer protection cases.

Hood recommended the money be spent on quality early childhood education programs, including fully funding a state funded pre-k program already in place. In the 2018-2019 school year, only about 36 percent of incoming kindergartners achieved the target score on the kindergarten readiness assessment.

However, students in state-funded pre-k programs scored much better with three-fourths scoring above the readiness benchmark.
