Arrest Made in Shooting at Gulf Mist Apartments

On July 1, 2016, the Gulfport Police Department arrested 25 year old Michael Phillip Peden, of Gulfport, on the charge of 1st Degree Murder.
The arrest was the result of an investigation into a shooting reported at approximately 3:35 a.m. At that time, the Gulfport Police Patrol Division responded to Gulf Mist Apartments located at 26 Pass Road. Upon arrival, an adult male later identified as Christopher Smith, was discovered deceased behind building 21. American Medical Response (AMR) and Harrison County Coroner Gary Hargrove were summoned to the scene. Upon their arrival, it was discovered that the victim suffered from a gunshot would to the upper torso.
The on scene investigation further revealed that Smith and Peden were involved in an argument when Peden brandished a hand gun and shot Smith multiple times to the upper torso. Afterward, Peden fled the scene on foot but remained in the area.
During a follow up investigation, Peden was developed and identified as the suspect resulting in a warrant for his arrest. Peden was located and arrested within the apartment complex.
This investigation is ongoing.
After booking and other procedures, Peden was transported to the Harrison County Adult Detention Facility to be held in lieu of a $1,000,000.00 bond set by Harrison County Justice Court Judge Louise D. Ladner.
