Armed Forces Retirement Home Celebrates Veterans Day

Honoring the men and women who serve our country is what Veterans Day is all about. Tuesday, up and down the Coast, people celebrated many years of military service.

From the young and innocent to the aged and wise, hundreds joined together to celebrate Veterans Day at the Armed Forces Retirement Home in Gulfport. Raymond Terry is a World War II Navy veteran from the Gulf Coast. Growing up, he, just like the elementary students present Tuesday morning, celebrated Veterans Day with former and active members of the military. Terry says, "I can remember when, believe it or not, I did this for World War I vets. I was born and raised in Biloxi, so I’m quite familiar with the kids."

What it means to serve our country is not being lost on our local children. Students from West Elementary tell News 25 that they’re learning about veterans in school. Kyell Marice, 7, says, "We’ve been learning that veterans, they fight in war and they save our country."

Although they may not fully grasp how these brave men and women put their lives on the line for our country, they do realize serving in the military is something to admire, a path in life they themselves may one day take. Marice also says, "I want to train to be a veteran."

Ron Hopkins, a Vietnam War veteran, says, "I think it’s terrific, especially the two boys that came over to talk to people and the one wants to grow up to be a veteran. That’s the best thing ever."

For both the young and the distinguished, it was a special day to honor many years of dedicated service.
