Arbor Day tree distribution at the Ocean Springs Civic Center

Cars lined up at the Ocean Springs Civic Center to receive their trees in celebration of Arbor Day.

Although the weather was cold, the convenient drive-thru Arbor Day tree distribution kept participants warm and safe from COVID-19.

One thousand trees were distributed to members in the community.

The tree giveaway was sponsored by the City of Ocean Springs, Fulgham’s Tree Service, Mississippi Forestry Commission, and Singing River Electric Cooperative. The Boy Scout Troop 228 out of Vancleave also participated.

Ocean Springs Arborist David Minkler explains why planting trees is so important. “Trees help the environment by intercepting rainfall, clearing out air pollution, decreasing erosion, and generally beautifying the city.”

Governor Tate Reeves proclaimed February 12th as Mississippi Arbor Day as well February 13th through the 20th as Mississippi Tree Planting Week.
