Annual Shoe Box Mardi Gras Float Contest on parade
The winners have been chosen for the 20th annual Shoe Box Mardi Gras Float Contest in Biloxi.
This is a Mardi Gras activity that kids get to partake in. The shoe-box floats have been on display at the Biloxi Visitors Center. The projects are put together by fifth and sixth graders from Biloxi public schools.
This year’s contest followed the Gulf Coast Carnival theme of ‘Ride of your life.’ The eleven contest winners were announced at the Biloxi City Council meeting.
News 25 caught up with one of the three first-place winners, sixth grader Jacoby Altman from Biloxi Upper Elementary School. “My float had hot air balloons, some of them are paper and some of them are paper mache. They have clouds underneath them, made from stuffing. (What’s the hardest part about making that?) Probably the paper mache, that took a long time.”
The contest is designed to help kids learn about Mardi Gras history and keep an annual carnival tradition going on the Coast.
