Anniston Elementary Visits the Port of Gulfport

From apples and bananas, to Oreos and clothing items, students from Anniston Elementary learned all about the things that pass through the Port of Gulfport.
Some children, not only in the Gulfport area, but around the state of Mississippi, are unaware we have a port. Today’s field trip gave these students an opportunity to learn about the port that’s right in their backyard.
Jonathan Daniels, Port of Gulfport CEO, said “From the vessels that they see down there that are pretty cool, as we’re hearing from them, to the different types of products that all know when they go into the grocery store. It’s also an opportunity for them to talk to their parents and give them some of the information.
Miss USM 2015 Hannah Roberts said, “I think it is so important at a young age to encourage children to explore all their possibilities because there are so many jobs available in Mississippi that do relate to STEM fields, and I think when kids are growing up and talking about what they want to be when they grow up, it’s important that we encourage them to look into becoming a doctor or an engineer or mathematician.”
Who knows, a future ship captain or port manager could be right here in this group.
