Amtrak Work Session in Biloxi
A series of work sessions along the Gulf Coast to discuss what it will take to bring back Amtrak continues today in Biloxi.
The meeting, conducted by the Federal Highway Administration, included about 20 representatives from Amtrak, CSX, the Southern Rail Commission and more. This group is part of Senator Wicker’s initiative to get a recommendation on how to best return Amtrak service to our stretch of the Gulf Coast. Officials discussed everything from track and station improvements to federal requirements, anything that can be done to ensure the return of Amtrak is a smooth ride.
Jay Westbrook, assistant vice president of passenger operations for CSX, said, “We need to create an opportunity here that allows the economic development of the area to continue, that the freight system needs to be vibrant and so we want to make sure that it is indeed vibrant for the future as well as give Amtrak the opportunity to restore this service to the Gulf Coast.”
Senior Vice President of the Long Distance Business Line for Amtrak Mark Murphy said, “The aggressive nature and the urgency around the cooperation and collaboration of the folks that are at the table, this is unprecedented and it really is. It’s fun to be a part of this. It’s nice when you can start to see folks come together and work towards something that will ultimately be of benefit to everybody involved.”
The next work session is scheduled for the end of this month in Mobile.
