Amateur Radio Field Day
Individuals from all walks of life with a common interest in amateur radio got together over the weekend for a field day.
The Great Southern DX Association is a local amateur radio club of unpaid individuals that are well known for their communication support in disasters.
During the field day members of the club get together to test their equipment in remote locations. Great Southern DX Association President Ray Rocker said, “In the aftermath of a disaster we would mobilize and handle traffic, meaning pass messages back and forth where the commercial communications networks either might not be working at all or would be over loaded with emergency traffic so we can step in and help pass that information from the disaster stricken areas to places that need it.”
This field day has been around since 1933 when it was held as an emergency exercise.
