Amateur Radio Field Day

It’s a reliable form of communication in any weather, situation, or disaster and has saved lives. Amateur radio will be there when you need it and you have a chance this weekend to learn all about it.

Tomorrow and Sunday, the Jackson County Amateur Radio Association will be having their ‘Field Day’ at the West Jackson County Safe Room.

Field Day is a day celebrated throughout North America. It is a showcase for how amateur radio works reliably under any conditions from almost any location to create an independent communications network.

They say when a natural disaster strikes and our cell phones quit working, this will be the way we are able to communicate. Charlie Hardt with the Jackson County Amateur Radio Association said, “This is especially important here on the Gulf Coast with hurricane season in place. This is an excellent time for us to go out and exercise our talents in putting together emergency site radio communications.”

They will be set up by 8 a.m. and will start communicating at 1 p.m. Anyone is welcome to come and learn how to operate these radios.
