All-America honors by Baseball America announced

America’s pastime is stronger than ever in the Magnolia State with the Bulldogs winning the 2021 College World Series and players from three different Mississippi colleges earning All-America honors from various publications and organizations.

Most recently, Baseball America released its 2021 College Baseball Freshman All-America teams featuring players from Mississippi State, Ole Miss, and Southern Miss.

From Starkville, starting pitcher Will Bednar and relief pitcher Landon Sims claimed first team spots.

Bednar tossed 139 strikeouts over the season and had a 3.12 ERA. In 56 and a third innings, Sims racked up 100 Ks and a 1.44 ERA.

To close out their freshman campaigns, the pair gave up just one hit combined in a 9-0 nothing win in game three of the College World Series.

In Hattiesburg, Southern Miss baseball starting pitcher Ben Etheridge and outfielder Reed Trimble earned third and second team honors respectively.

For the third time over, Trimble is a freshman All-American following his first full season with the Golden Eagles due to COVID in which the outfielder tied for the team lead batting average with .345 while holding the team’s top spots with 17 home runs and 72 runs batted in. Southern Miss Head Baseball Coach Scott Berry said, “Well you know he has tremendous bat speed and he’s had that since the first day he walked on campus. But I think it’s just being able to bring it all together into his game where he is right now. And the short two years that he’s been here really just a season-and-a-half if you look at the shortened season last year, so real proud of him and how he’s continued to develop and make his game really, really strong.”

Ole Miss shortstop Jacob Gonzalez was also named Freshman All-America Second Team.
