AKAs declare Jan 20th as Kamala Harris Day

Vice President Kamala Harris made history for black women across the world with her inauguration as the 49th Vice President of the United States.

The Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority shares a sisterly bond to the vice president and they say they have her back one hundred percent.

Harrison is the first woman, first black woman, the first South-Asian and first member of the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority elected as vice president.

The local AKA Chapter in Gulfport participated in the social media phenomenon rocking their pearls and pink in solidarity to the vice president as she took the stage at the Presidential Inauguration.

AKA’s celebrated Madam Vice President Harris, declaring January 20th as Kamala Harris Day. AKA Chapter President of Upsilon Chi Omega Dr. Lawanda S. Thornton said, “She represents change, she represents so much more for people who look like me. I’m excited. I am fortunate to be a part of the same organization in which she’s a part of and we want to make her proud. We want to have other girls look up to us, we want to impact our country in a positive way.”

Not only did AKAs celebrate Madam Vice President Harris, but women of color around the nation wore pearls and Chuck Taylors, posting pictures on multiple social media platforms to honor her.
