African Americans and the right to vote

The annual Black History program kicked off tonight in Biloxi.

The community gathered to celebrate the 15th amendment’s 150th anniversary and other landmark achievements.

During tonight’s program, there was a performance from the Infinity Church youth choir, several guest speakers including a welcome from Biloxi Mayor FoFo Gilich.

Delta Sigma Theta Sorority member Zeleder Barnes says the most important message is understanding the right to vote. “I grew up in the 60s and know the struggles that we had to register and actually to vote. It’s personal to me. I just think we need to educate the young people, old people, middle age people that we need to learn that it is a privilege and a right.”

The Black History Program is a long term tradition spanning more than ten years.
