All Aboard the Point Sur
Senator Wicker took full advantage of his visit to the Coast by stopping in Gulfport to tour one of the University of Southern Mississippi’s research vessels for the very first time.
The Point Sur was originally built in 1980 and is the only one of its class home ported in the northern Gulf of Mexico, east of the Mississippi River.
Director of USM’s School of Ocean Science and Technology Monty Graham says the vessel gives students valuable hands-on opportunities dealing with oceanography in the Gulf Coast. “It’s the hardest working body of water in the United States. We need to emphasize this more to our friends in DC so that we know that the funding and the support for scientific endeavors continues.”
The main deck covers 1100 square feet and is equipped with heavy operation equipment, wet and dry laboratories and scientific equipment for all operations.
