Aaron’s 20 mile hike

A West Wortham eighth grader made his push to become an Eagle Scout over the weekend.

Friends and family lined up to cheer on Aaron Smith, who suffers from cerebral palsy and optic nerve damage in one eye.

Aaron is an honored Boy Scout who has more than 40 merit badges. To become an Eagle Scout he had to hike over 20 miles. Aaron and his teacher, Toni Martino, showed up to Jones Park early Saturday morning to start their hike.

After making it around the park five miles, they hiked up and down Highway 90 for the rest. “It’s going good and I’m tired of it,” said Aaron.

Martino said, “He’s doing really well. He’s just tired. He’s not hurting so we can get through it. He’s doing excellent though.”

Around 4 p.m. Saturday, Aaron completed his hike, moving one step closer to being an Eagle Scout.
