Mississippi ending 15 months free rent and utility payments

Governor Tate Reeves announced that the state is ending a federal program that incentivizes people to stay out of the work force, offering up to 15 months of free rent and utility bill payments.

Today’s announcement only applies to applications that have not been submitted yet. It has no effect on applications already in the system.

The Mississippi Home Corporation will stop accepting applications to the program starting August 15th.

Governor Reeves said the state is in the best fiscal and financial shape in its history and there are jobs for anyone who wants to work. “As you probably heard me mention last week at Neshoba, Mississippi was the tenth best state in the nation in weathering the economic consequences of COVID-19. Mississippi’s unemployment rate recently hit its lowest level in our state’s history and investment dollars and investment capital are flowing into Mississippi. And because of that, the drop in the unemployment rate since COVID is the 13th best in the nation. Mississippi is in the best fiscal shape we’ve ever been in; Mississippi is in the best financial shape we’ve ever been in.”
