1699 Weekend of Discovery in Ocean Springs
The City of Ocean Springs was founded in 1699. Now, 320 years later, residents are gearing up to celebrate the historical mark this weekend.
The 1699 Weekend of Discovery is a two day event with Friday night being an unveiling of the court. Saturday will be jam packed. At 8 a.m., the Race of Discovery 5K will begin. At 10, the Ocean Springs Yacht Club will begin their regatta.
At 11 there will be a pet parade followed by a Native American fire ceremony.
There will also be a full dress reenactment of the landing in Ocean Springs beginning at 1 at Fort Maurepas. Ocean Springs Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Cynthia Dobbs Sutton said, “This is a fun way for families to come out and just kind of learn the history of Ocean Springs. We were founded in 1699 so this is really great way to tell our story about who we are and who the folks were that founded our community. It’s just a way to remember the history and the culture of Ocean Springs.”
All of the events are free and open to the public.
