Volunteers in Medicine Clinic celebrates ten years

For ten years, the Volunteers in Medicine Clinic has led the way towards a healthier community.

Ten years ago, Shelia Jenkins, along with others, realized a lot of locals in the community did not have health care therefore it was time to make a change. “We decided there had to be a better way to help people in our community. So, we opened up the clinic one day a week ten years ago.”

Now open three days a week, volunteer nurses, doctors, and nurse practitioners cater to the community with a free clinic. This allows locals to come in and receive medical attention before reaching the need of going to the hospital. “Our program, because we are free, we can get a person their medication for one year if they qualify for our clinic and we can get it for one year for free.”

In order to continue to provide this service to the community, the clinic needs your help. They are currently in need of physicians and other volunteers. “We really work hard to make them feel like they’ve actually walked into a place that they are paying a lot of money for, but they are not paying anything for our services. We strictly stay open on donations.”

Also, in honor of the ten year anniversary, Volunteers in Medicine asks for a $10 donation to keep stress off of patients. “Ten years shows people we aren’t just a fly by night group. We are here to stay.”
