Lt. Governor Visits USM Gulf Coast Research Lab

Hidden deep in the bayou in Ocean Springs, the USM Gulf Coast Research Laboratory is the largest research facility on the gulf coast. Education isn’t all the USM lab does; they also provide scientific support to the departments of marine resources and environmental quality.
"We run the analyses for the beach monitoring program, with the seafood safety for opening the oyster waters, we assist the state with monitoring the shrimp population so we can open up the shrimp season,” said Read Hendon, Associate Director of the USM Research Lab.
After millions of gallons of oil poured into the gulf five years ago, they were integral in testing and clean up.
"Having seen what transpired in the Gulf of Mexico and the research that’s being done here, quite frankly it’s just fascinating,” said Lt. Governor Tate Reeves.
"One thing most of us learned from the oil spill his how little we know about our very valuable, productive, and dynamic coastal environment"
The state has made funding for the USM Gulf Research Lab a priority, hopefully guaranteeing results for years to come.
"We have some of the premier facilities in all of America, and that’s something we should be proud of.”
