Bocce Ball Tournament in Woolmarket
Bocce’s roots can be traced all the way back to the Roman Empire, and while the game had been modernized and gained popularity, it hasn’t reached the gulf coast until now.
"It’s played all over the world and we’re just a little behind schedule here in South Mississippi, but no longer”, said Thad Anderson.
Anderson and the Woolmarket Community Center are working with the Philadelphia Bocce League to bring organized matches to the Gulf Coast, but beginners of all ages can pick up and play at any time.
"I learned the rules and how to throw the ball, I’m just enjoying playing with my friends", said Peggy Cannette.
Harrison County Supervisor Connie Rockco helped build these Bocce courts in Woolmarket, which will be the site of next Thursday’s senior games against D’Iberville.
"The senior games overall are a great opportunity for seniors to participate in sports, the camaraderie that goes along with it, the socialization, and it’s just a heck of a lot of fun", said Anderson.
"I love playing and it’s so good for the seniors, it’s something that they can get exercise, and once they play, they love the game”, said Janet Meaut.
It’s a game Meaut and Anderson hope to see our seniors play with their grandchildren someday, bringing a little extra fun to the golden years.
"If a senior says, I don’t think I can play it, we’ll get them out here and they start throwing the ball as you saw today. They just go nuts over it, it’s a lot of fun and it’s enriching your life", said Anderson.
